Keys: every rekeyed lock comes with two fresh keys. Need more for family or a dog walker? He cuts them on site.

Things that raise it: brands that don't share a keyway, so one cylinder is replaced to put the house on a single key; a cylinder seized by salt or wear that has to be replaced instead (from $140); patented high-security keys.

How does the job go?

  1. You show ID with the address: the owner, or an adult who lives there (a power bill, deed or lease naming you also works).
  2. David E. pulls the cylinder; the rest of the lock stays in the door.
  3. The old pins come out and a new set goes in, matched to a fresh key.
  4. The cylinder goes back and he tests the new key from both sides.
  5. He tries one of your old keys in front of you to prove it's dead. Expect roughly a quarter of an hour per lock.

Rekey or replace?

Rekeying makes sense when the lock works well and you only want to retire old keys. Replace it when it's broken, crusted with salt near the beach, too cheap to take new pins, or when you want a stronger deadbolt or a smart lock. That is a lock change, from $140 per lock.

Condos: one more key

A lot of Florida condo declarations and rules oblige owners to hand management a unit key (Siegfried Rivera). After a condo rekey, plan to hand the office its new copy so they aren't holding a dead one — ask David E. for one extra for the association or your cleaner. Building and pool keys belong to the association and stay its job. Mailbox compartment locks are a separate job, from $85; see condo & 55+.

Rekey questions

Can I do it myself?

With a Kwikset SmartKey (look for a tiny hole beside the keyhole), the reset tool and a working key, yes. Other brands need new pins.

Will my home warranty pay?

Some home warranties bought at closing pay for part or all of a move-in rekey, so read your terms. Our invoice lists every lock separately.

Does it work on smart locks?

The codes reset in the lock's app. The backup key cylinder gets new pins like any other lock.

I don't have a single key to that door. Can you still make one?

Yes. David E. opens the lock first (the lockout price), then rekeys that cylinder at the extra-lock rate of $47, and you leave with two keys that work and no old ones floating around.

I just need a spare key. A self-service kiosk is cheaper. There is one inside the Speedway at 2350 N Powerline Rd (KeyMe).
